The video shows a Thursday evening Advanced Open Water+ / Seasearch dive near the Mewstone Ledges. Stunning scenery and some interesting marine life including a small cuttlefish who wasn't camera shy, a curious cuckoo wrasse who followed us throughout the dive and a war wounded spider crab. |
Seasearch "is a national project for volunteer sports divers who have an interest in what they're seeing under water, want to learn more and want to help protect the marine environment. The main aim is to map out the various types of sea bed found in the near-shore zone around the whole of the British Isles. In addition we are recording what lives in each area, establishing the richest sites for marine life, the sites where there are problems and the sites which need protection." To participate in one of our Seasearch dives, divers need to hold a recreational diving qualification suitable for the site being surveyed, have good buoyancy and an interest in marine life, and be a competent diver. Divers from all training agencies are welcome on our Seasearch dives.
You will be required to fill in a simple Seasearch form after the dive, to record the marine life you have seen. We normally go over to the Mount Batten Hotel bar to do this, once everyone is changed. You don't need to be an expert at identifying marine life to do this! ID guides are provided and there is always someone there who can help if you get stuck! Every little helps when recording what we've seen, so even if you can only identify a few species it all contributes towards gaining valuable information about our dive sites. It's the perfect opportunity to "give something back" from your dive!
